Up, Up and Away

Today the group makes a short flight to Sandakan before being once again separated into two groups for a ‘choose your own adventure’ type of experience.

Group A
On arrival to Sandakan, you will be transferred to the local jetty. From here you travel by speedboat, past fishing villages and locally crafted bamboo fish traps, to Turtle Island Marine Park where green turtles come ashore to lay their eggs every night of the year. In the afternoon, there’s time for swimming, snorkeling or lazing about on this stunning tropical island.

In the evening, we hope to witness the heartwarming display of a mother turtle laying her eggs and watch the researchers as they release protected hatchlings and guide them in their frantic dash to the ocean. It’s a moving experience in a very delicate environment that truly makes you think twice about our impact on the natural environment.

Group B
After checking in to your hotel you will make head to the tranquil Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary where you will get up close and personal with the majestic and incredibly fascinating Bachelor Proboscis Monkeys, only found in Borneo, as they laze and feed. The sanctuary is a protected forest reserve inhabited by several groups of wild proboscis monkeys.

Following your play date with the Proboscis Monkeys you will travel to a jungle ludge beside the Kinabatangan district where you will be able to relax and enjoy the local surroundings.

The Kinabatangan River is the 2nd longest river in Malaysia at 560 kms from its source at Mt Trus Madi to the Sulu Sea and is also a protected forest reserve which contains some of Borneo’s highest concentrations of wildlife.

In the late afternoon we will take a river cruise and hopefully spot some of the local wildlife such as crocodiles, macaques, wild orangutan and proboscis monkeys, as well as hornbills or kingfishers – just some of the many types of animals and birds found in this area. You may even spot the rare wild elephants of the region!

Your group will then travel back to Sandakan where you will have free time to explore the wide range of local cuisines available in the town at your own leisure.
